Three people. Two servers. Happy customers.
Mission Grow the company with a digital workforce. Then open the bill.
- Grow the company
- Open the bill
- Find where the money went
This is a simulation of a fictional company, Brightlane Digital, over 60 story days. The people, vendors, prices and customers are invented; nothing real is contacted. Every amount, count and date you see is computed in your browser by an economic model from the decisions you make, and the same decisions always give the same company. Rates are fictional scenario inputs, not the price of any real provider. Four kinds of money are kept apart and never added together: incurred (spent so far), forecast, committed (contracts still to bill) and invoiced.
Chapter 1 · Monday 09:00
The Perfect Little Company
Three people. Two servers. Happy customers.
Brightlane Digital is a small software-and-services shop. Owen Bright, the founder, Maya, the CFO, and Daniel, the CTO, deliver about thirty orders a day between them. Last month’s technology bill was small enough that Maya could explain every line of it. Every machine has a name, and every name has a reason.
They are at capacity. The way forward looks obvious: hire a digital employee. How far to go is your decision.
Chapter 2 · Week 1-2
Let’s Hire Some AI
Orders tick up. Digital workstations light up across the room.
LANE answers tickets, matches invoices and drafts code. Orders go up. Then every team wants digital help of its own, and somebody has to decide who may buy it.
Chapter 3 · Week 3
More Power!
“We just need a little more capacity.”
Customers keep coming, and capacity has to grow with them. Racks appear in bursts. The tiny office turns out to be one corner of a vast infrastructure hall.
Chapter 4 · Friday 16:45
The Bill Arrives
Celebration. Silence. Avalanche. “…Excuse me?”
A customer has just signed and the office is celebrating. Then a quiet notification: the invoice for the first month. Then another: what was spent today. Then a forecast, and the contracts that are still to bill. Each is a different kind of number, and none of them is the whole story.
The bill is real and the meters are still running. What you do right now has a price either way.
Chapter 5 · The weekend
Where Did the Money Go?
The office freezes. One timeline glows across the floor.
Follow each charge back through the usage, the resource, the workflow and the department to a person and an approval, where there is one. Where nothing was recorded, the chain shows a gap, and the gap stays a gap.
Chapter 6 · Monday 09:00
The Panic Button
A customer launches on Friday. What do you touch?
Choose the controls. Some need evidence first, and some stop more than they should.
Chapter 7 · Replay
Grow the Company Again
Same company. Same seed. Same customers. Different controls.
The comparison shows fictional simulation outcomes, not guaranteed savings or measured product benchmarks. Imperium and Observatory capabilities are labelled as shipped where they are; Otopia and approval gates are labelled PREVIEW. People, not Tracston, decide which infrastructure is stopped.
